STRATEGY: MODEL TRADES: UPDATED FOR 05/22/08

COMMENTS: The futures are mildly POSITIVE (8:15 pm PDT) currently but could change before the open. Futures are showing a little positive as the DOW and S&P 500 held some supports from yesterda throughout the day as trading looked a little lighter in front of 3 day holiday. It will probably be slower even tomorrow. I have added a one day buy situation in case SUTR drops a little lower, and probably won't happen, but it looks pretty good with support at $7. If it happened it would give us a split of steel stocks between GSI and SUTR. I only have it for Friday and if it doesn't take, we'll reevaluate next week. Big hit in model today with 2 stocks or it would have been slightly positive. CSIQ had 2 down grades and TBSI priced an offering and the short sellers immediately jumped on the news and took it well below 51 to low of 45.30 and it closed at 47.49. I see the Alert showed 400 sh of CSIQ, but we sold 200 in front of earnings at 31.80. We are well ahead of our last addition at 18.52.

Model Trading Procedures: As much as practical I provide advance notice in the strategy section of the website the night before the next trading day of possible prices or what stocks I am looking to buy or sell. Occasionally an opportunity develops during the day that is too good to pass up as stocks sometimes drop on rumors or raise guidance, etc that make them attractive. We have been following this procedure for most of the years Poormans has had a model (since starting in 1996), but we got away from it for a while and went back to it on 6/9/07.  I tried for nearly 2 years to provide strict prices the night before and overall I think I held back more investors than were helped. Thus we are returned to the way we handled the model in prior years.

NOTE: One of my favorite strategies (not original, but one used by Wall Street in bygone days) is to sell half on a double, especially when it is still less than fair value. IVAC was our first double in the model for 2006 with buy on 1 January at 13.20 and sell at 30.65 and in 2005 model bought at 11.10 on 11/10/05. We sold 1/2 of OMNI on 7/7/06 for 110% gain from 5/24/06 buy.

IN PLACE ORDERS: (Click on symbol to see charts on Stockcharts.com - also gives DMA and RSI information) I frequently give a range of prices so all orders of interested subscribers don't happen at the identical price.

HPQ (3) - Bought 100 sh @ 46.02 p.b on 8/21. Large cap tech company (especially printers and computers) that has been pretty solid all year. Short interest 2.3 days and with sector average pe of 26.0 the near term target is $77. Still looks attractive in 44-45 area.  RSI 48.5. Reports 5/13.

SOLF came through with flying colors with double the earnings estimate of .15 but the new oil high of 131 a barrel is busting the market and bringing on the sell programs as the DOW looks to be headed for 12,600 to test the 50 DMA. I was hoping CSIQ would get a bounce from SOLF, and it did for the early going, but then sellers came in just like they did CLR which had a big run yesterday. Solars and shippers have some bright spots but the rest of the market looks to be mostly under selling pressure. I'll have to take a closer review of our holdings today although I have already updated the mid-week alert target prices but will do the chart information after the close today. Probably not a bad time to have a little cash here. Stocks down $1: HPQ, CLR, CF, BGC, FSLR, TRA TNH, BIDU, GOOG, ENS, AKS, DECK and up $1: SOLF, LDK, DRYS, PDO, TTES, DK, BVN.

8:05 am 20 MAY

My wife made it pretty well yesterday with help of pain meds and still sleeping this morning, but will need to fix breakfast, etc for her pretty soon. It was nice to see 16th place in the contest as it won't last long as it is  mostly solar stocks and they will come down when the market for oil drops. So far they are hanging in there today for the most part in spite of a market that gapped down at the open. Looks like short sellers are hitting the market with more sell programs and trying to discourage buyers, although the leaders have bounced back somewhat today after selling off yesterday. CSIQ is holding up pretty well today along with QID in the model while recent addition to database CLR is the big mover today up nearly 10 points at last look. PDO was added a couple weeks ago and shot up to 23 from 7.70 when it went in the database, but it looks a bit loft so I sold the few shares I had bought to watch it. DAR has also been holding up so far today in the model but we could have another 200 point down day if the sellers have their way. Stocks down $1: DRYS, GFA, RIO, WDC, GTI, DECK, HD, FCX, UTX, JRJC and up $1: CLR, PDO, CSIQ, FPP, QID, ARD, BRY, WTI, BIDU, CRK, BUCY, TNH, FSLR. TBSI is pricing about 2 Mil additional shares along with 1.3M from some larger share holders and that could put some weakness in it for a few days, depending on the demand.

Market started down and then came back to the "green zone" where we like it. I am off to wife's surgery in a few minutes so I don't have time to list all the winners and losers on my screen, but do see energy, solars and shippers looking good (didn't check fertilizers). EXM beat by .14 and now if DRYS beats the shippers could be off on a good run for the week and join the solars which also look strong. SOLF reports Weds and a disappointment could slow down the sector. ENS raised guidance this morning and PDO continues to move up as does GHM that we sold out of the model. LDK also broke which is in my CNBC contest model and actually planned to sell it Friday but the contest was not accessible in the last hour to make changes.

6:45 am 16 May

Bear Friday is upon us as we can give thanks for a very good week so far and it looks like some profit taking in the early going and if given the chance the sell programs will take the market down as far as they can get away with. We did get a fill in GSI this morning as it dropped to 8.51 low so far and then bounced back to $9 currently. The shippers DRYS and EXM report Monday I believe and they are following TBSI lead and holding up the shippers this week and even today so far in a down market. PDO is running up again after hitting 14 low and SUTR is still up nearly a buck and it is a possible buy if it drops back near $7 again on p.b. but I don't have listed for the model at this time as we are running low on cash. CSIQ is also bouncing for us along with AUY. Here is the model trade information.

MODEL CHANGE: Bought 500 GSI @ 8.70 as listed last night for 50/200 DMA support in Strategy. Cash Balance: $3,797.
